Surviving the Arctic Vortex

In the middle of February a massive cold front from Canada pushed down through the US bringing a week of freezing temperatures and snow to much of the country. Texas, however, was hit especially hard because the state never sees sustained weather like this and the power grid was not able to supply in pace with the demand. The ERCOT energy crisis was the national news story all week.

Fortunately, Amarillo is one of the few areas in Texas on a different power grid, so we did not have to suffer through ongoing outages in below freezing temperatures that many of our friends and family did in other parts of Texas. Poor Grandma and Grandpa Howe had their power off for up to 8 hours at a time. In addition to losing electricity and heat, we also knew people with frozen swimming pools, burst pipes, unsafe water or no water, food and gas shortages, and sky rocketing energy bills. Poor Texas!

While we faired the storm fairly well, here are some things to remember from that week:
  • I was glad I decided to stock up on groceries on Saturday, because we didn't end up leaving the house for several days. Our stores did stay stocked when we did finally venture out. In Dallas the shelves were completely empty.
  • School and work were cancelled for the entire week to help conserve energy.
  • We did have one 2 hour outage, and when the power was restored it fried the circuit board in our garage door and we had to have it replaced.
  • The combined snowfall from the storms was over a foot in Amarillo.
  • Temperatures were in single digits, or below zero, for a few days. We did not let the kids go outside to play in the snow until about day 5 of the storm when it had a chance to warm up some.
The artic vortex arrives in Amarillo - everything started freezing, and then snow would come a couple days later

Griffin developed a croupy cough on Friday night. It was bad and I thought we would have to take him in to the ER, but the extra cold air helped keep it in check. We probably looked crazy walking the neighborhood when it was 15 degrees out.

On Sunday we woke up to our first round of snow. It continued throughout the day and church was cancelled. It was hard to measure because it was extremely windy. The rooftops were bare, but then parts of the yard had drifts over a foot deep.

We did lots of crafts and puzzles over the next few days to keep busy

By Monday I was really craving snow cones and we finally found a store that was open and had syrups in stock! Dave braved the arctic to get them for me :) They did not have any blackberry flavor, but he did find my second favorites!

The next day I put together a little snow cone kit to share with our neighbors and Dave walked it over to their house. There were no car tracks anywhere because no one had been driving. The wind had also blown the snow perfectly level, so Dave said he almost fell when he got to curb because he couldn't tell where the sidewalk ended and the street started.

When he got back home he brought in these giant icicles that were growing by our front door to show the kids

On Wednesday it finally warmed up enough (20s) to go out and play. The trampoline park was having a contest on Facebook for the best snow creation. We submitted this photo of a "Snoa Constrictor" and won a $15 gift card!

Finally enjoying the snow that they had been staring at for the past three days

By Friday things were finally started to melt out a bit! Scary Frog popped out again in the front yard, and you could still see Dave's frozen footprints from his walk to the neighbors house 3 days before.

I shoveled out a path to our door so Amazon could start bringing us packages again :)

The lovely aftermath of snow play. They always talk about what an ordeal it is to get kids dressed in snow clothes, but I think the clean up is worse.

March Mishaps

I'm not sure if pregnancy has cause me to let my guard down, or if the extra time at home due to coronavirus is leading to mischief, but we have had WAY more "incidents" outside the usual messes and trouble over the past couple weeks than normal. No one is innocent, and luckily no one has been hurt, but I am so ready for things to calm down! These kids sure can cause trouble sometimes, which makes me wonder why we decided to add one more to our crew...

After several warnings about putting a nite lite right next to her bed because it was dangerous, Sophie finally had an "I told you so" moment. Her favorite blanket "Purple" got a little too close in the night and received a few burn wounds. We are so lucky that nothing actually caught fire or her whole bed would have gone up in flames while she slept.

We were getting ready to leave for the library when I though I heard water. I started checking bathrooms to see if a sink and been left running and found the kids' toilet gushing water. Darling Davey decided to try and flush a cup and there was water everywhere!! It took me about 20 towels to mop it up and we ran space heaters and fans for the next two days to hopefully take care of any remaining moister. I am so glad I caught it before leaving or we would have had a real flood on our hands when I got back!

I'm still not sure what happened here... I went to get Charlie in the morning and found his bed, blankets, and a few books covered in blood, yet there was nothing wrong with him. My best guess is that a bloody nose in the night may have led to him vomiting, but we will never know because he is too young to tell us.

Charlie loves to mess with things and ended up breaking the handle assembly on the toilet. Luckily it was a pretty easy fix.

Charlie also took it upon himself to organize all our dental floss! I was shocked that only one got unwound during the process.

Charlie (he is being featured a lot!) did some engraving on the plantation shutters in Sophie's room. He is such a quiet, happy guy but I guess we need to keep better eyes on him!

Davey decided to decorate the interior of the van with a ballpoint pen. My cleaning efforts have not been successful so far. It's faded, but the marks are all still there. A week before this happened, he also climbed in the van and actually started the car, which could have ended so badly, but he was caught within seconds of his dastardly deed.

Crazy Days

Most days I feel like I'm doing pretty good with the transition to three kids, but this week got off to a rough start. I don't know if the kids just had too much pent up energy, or if I was off my game, or if they ate crazy pills for breakfast... but Monday hit us like a freight train.

The morning actually got off to a great start. The kids were happy and we shut the TV off an hour earlier than normal because I was able to get everyone ready, and breakfast all cleaned up while Charlie napped. Both kids were due for a bath, so I made a nice bubble bath in the master tub, and even added a few new toys to make it more fun. Things were great for about 10 minutes, and then went downhill. Here is the progression of events:
  • Someone was removed from bath early for dumping water over the side (Davey)
  • The remaining person in the bath squeezed out the whole bottle of shampoo and spread it all around the edge of the tub (Sophie)
  • Someone wasn't feeling well and wanted to nurse every hour (Charlie)
  • Someone stole all the boxes of Jello from the pantry, but fortunately could not figure out how to open them (Davey)
  • Someone was found standing on a bar stool trying to reach the fruit snacks on the top shelf (Sophie)
  • Someone is always touching or bothering the other someone (Sophie & Davey)
  • Someone had projectile vomit (Charlie)
  • Despite an earlier scolding, someone was found leaving the pantry later with an armful of fruit snacks (Sophie)
  • Someone dumped all the books off the shelf. After they are cleaned up, they dump the books again (Davey)
  • Someone dumped all the diapers and wipes in the closet on to the floor (Sophie)
  • Someone threw their grilled cheese sandwich across the table because anything you give them these days is "yucky" (Davey)
  • Someone keeps taking the baby's binky, making him cry (Davey)
  • Someone picks the baby up by his head while he was napping, making him cry (Sophie)
  • Someone uses the baby bouncer (with the baby in it) as a stool to reach the counter, making the baby cry (Davey)
  • Someone was found leaving the pantry once more with 5 fruit snacks shoved down her pants (Sophie)
  • Someone went running through the house using a wet toilet brush as a sword (Davey)
  • Someone went running through the house without a diaper after stripping naked (Davey)
And so on, and so forth... I know when they are teenagers I will probably long for the days when my problems were thrown sandwiches and pilfered fruit snacks, but in the moment it was a bit overwhelming and my patience didn't always win out. Luckily there were a few sweet moments mixed in too, just enough to temper my frustration and keep me from locking them outside for the rest of the afternoon.

During these crazy moments, I am glad for early bedtimes, and that each day can be a fresh start!

The shampoo incident - at least it made our bathroom smell like watermelons

Feeling better after a bath and new clothes. Unfortunately this happened right after I had just washed all the towels used to clean up the shampoo.

Just making messes

Reading books together (the ones that were all dumped off the shelf)

Charlie resting in the crib (for his own protection)

After a month of refusing his pillow, Davey called me in at night and said "I want my pillow" and then promptly fell asleep on it. Nothing sweeter than a sleeping boy :)

What the Hail?!

On Saturday afternoon Sophie and I were both in my bed attempting to take a nap (I was closing my eyes, while she kept snaking all the way down under the bedspread before popping out at the foot of the bed), when we suddenly heard super loud pounding on the roof. We ran downstairs and opened the front door to find the biggest hail storm I've ever seen. It wasn't Texas big, but impressive by Utah standards.

I grabbed a few hail stones for Sophie to hold because she didn't understand what was going on when I said "balls of ice are falling from the sky!"

One of our cars was already undercover, but I was worried about our other car out in the open possible getting damaged. It probably would have been fine, but Dave was gone, and I panicked and put on my coat, grabbed an umbrella and ran out to pull it into the neighbor's carport. It felt like getting hit by paintballs and my shoes got soaked because there was so much water in the parking lot. After that I went back inside to watch the storm from the window with Sophie. It lasted about 15 minutes, and then the clouds cleared and the sun came out. Sophie and I went out exploring, because by some miracle, Davey slept through the whole thing!

The storm drains couldn't handle the water and our parking lot became a little lake. It took my shoes a few days to dry out, and we discovered Sophie's boots were not 100% water tight.

Inspecting the mountain of hail that ran off the roof

More splashing and a better view of the flooded street

These are so cold mommy!

Backyard Black Bear

My sister and I were sitting in the kitchen today when Jobe (who was out on the balcony) suddenly started barking like crazy. We ran outside and saw a BEAR wandering through our backyard. I ran upstairs to get my camera and when I came back out the bear had moved into the street and was headed toward the neighbor's yard. CRAZY!

Jobe, the vigilant sentinel

The BEAR

Dave was walking in the exact same place the night before with Jobe and our niece  - YIKES!!

The Week before Christmas Break: the Good, the Bad, and the Unexpected

We've had a crazy week...

THE GOOD

Dave celebrated his 28th birthday, finished the 3rd semester of the MBA program, and submitted applications to 5 PhD programs. I survived the final week of elementary school, which is pretty much one big, exhausting, yet fun, party.

We had a breakfast with cousins living in Utah, a holiday dinner with other pre-PhD families, went out to dinner with my grandma, and got to attend the Mormon Tabernacle Choir Christmas Concert (thanks Aunt Sue!).

THE BAD

Dave had a couple cavities filled and still has 6 applications to go. Our car also started making a squeaking noise when we turned left, which then turned into a horrible grinding sound so we took it into the shop where is stayed for 3 days and received  new axles, bearings, and sway bars. Hoo-ray.

THE UNEXPECTED

While we were without a car for three days, so many people helped us get where we needed to be:

I got a ride home from an office friend, then a ride back with my brother-in-law Jeremy, then a ride home from the music teacher, then a ride back from a 4th grade teacher, then my boss lent me his car for the night to take home, and then I brought it back the next morning. And we borrowed my aunt's car to get to the choir concert in Salt Lake.

Our family, friends, and co-workers were all amazing, but I have never done so much ride coordination and hope I don't have to do it again anytime soon. Phew!

Now that that is all behind us, we can start our break and enjoy the holidays. Merry Christmas!
