Surviving the Arctic Vortex

In the middle of February a massive cold front from Canada pushed down through the US bringing a week of freezing temperatures and snow to much of the country. Texas, however, was hit especially hard because the state never sees sustained weather like this and the power grid was not able to supply in pace with the demand. The ERCOT energy crisis was the national news story all week.

Fortunately, Amarillo is one of the few areas in Texas on a different power grid, so we did not have to suffer through ongoing outages in below freezing temperatures that many of our friends and family did in other parts of Texas. Poor Grandma and Grandpa Howe had their power off for up to 8 hours at a time. In addition to losing electricity and heat, we also knew people with frozen swimming pools, burst pipes, unsafe water or no water, food and gas shortages, and sky rocketing energy bills. Poor Texas!

While we faired the storm fairly well, here are some things to remember from that week:
  • I was glad I decided to stock up on groceries on Saturday, because we didn't end up leaving the house for several days. Our stores did stay stocked when we did finally venture out. In Dallas the shelves were completely empty.
  • School and work were cancelled for the entire week to help conserve energy.
  • We did have one 2 hour outage, and when the power was restored it fried the circuit board in our garage door and we had to have it replaced.
  • The combined snowfall from the storms was over a foot in Amarillo.
  • Temperatures were in single digits, or below zero, for a few days. We did not let the kids go outside to play in the snow until about day 5 of the storm when it had a chance to warm up some.
The artic vortex arrives in Amarillo - everything started freezing, and then snow would come a couple days later

Griffin developed a croupy cough on Friday night. It was bad and I thought we would have to take him in to the ER, but the extra cold air helped keep it in check. We probably looked crazy walking the neighborhood when it was 15 degrees out.

On Sunday we woke up to our first round of snow. It continued throughout the day and church was cancelled. It was hard to measure because it was extremely windy. The rooftops were bare, but then parts of the yard had drifts over a foot deep.

We did lots of crafts and puzzles over the next few days to keep busy

By Monday I was really craving snow cones and we finally found a store that was open and had syrups in stock! Dave braved the arctic to get them for me :) They did not have any blackberry flavor, but he did find my second favorites!

The next day I put together a little snow cone kit to share with our neighbors and Dave walked it over to their house. There were no car tracks anywhere because no one had been driving. The wind had also blown the snow perfectly level, so Dave said he almost fell when he got to curb because he couldn't tell where the sidewalk ended and the street started.

When he got back home he brought in these giant icicles that were growing by our front door to show the kids

On Wednesday it finally warmed up enough (20s) to go out and play. The trampoline park was having a contest on Facebook for the best snow creation. We submitted this photo of a "Snoa Constrictor" and won a $15 gift card!

Finally enjoying the snow that they had been staring at for the past three days

By Friday things were finally started to melt out a bit! Scary Frog popped out again in the front yard, and you could still see Dave's frozen footprints from his walk to the neighbors house 3 days before.

I shoveled out a path to our door so Amazon could start bringing us packages again :)

The lovely aftermath of snow play. They always talk about what an ordeal it is to get kids dressed in snow clothes, but I think the clean up is worse.

Midway Ice Castles

Tonight we redeemed our tickets to the Midway Ice Castles that my brother gave us for Christmas. They did not disappoint! It was freezing cold (somewhere in the teens), but the night was calm and clear so we were able to bundle up and have a good time. We were well prepared and had snow clothes for everyone, hand warmers, blankets, a sled to pull the kids and hot chocolate waiting in the car. I even had the kids in pajamas underneath so they could fall asleep on the way home and then we could move them into bed.

It took us a good 10 minutes to get everyone bundled, but I'm glad we all had enough layers to stay warm!

Ready to go in

I knew Sophie would love to meet the "real" Elsa in her ice castle so I looked at the schedule online before we went to time our arrival with the princesses. She was sooo excited and talked about it for the whole day leading up to our visit. On our drive out to Midway she fell asleep in the car and, when we got out at Subway to eat dinner, she jolted awake and started looking around saying, "Elsa? Elsa? Elsa, where are you?" Luckily we found her right as we walked in and were the first ones in line to greet her.

Giving Elsa a hug

She was even more excited when she saw that the "real" Anna was there too

My little ice princess

Davey the Blue Marshmallow. He was a pretty good sport tonight considering it was freezing cold and he spent two hours immobilized in a snowsuit.

Some of the amazing ice structures

Watching Sophie crawl through a tunnel

The highlight for Sophie (besides the princesses) was the ice slides. I took her the first time and was worried she might be too scared because lap riders were not allowed and, although we were going at the same time, she wouldn't be able to see me until the bottom because there was a wall dividing the two tracks. To my surprise, she sat down and went without hesitation, and asked to go again as soon as we finished. Brave girl! We let her go one more time with Dave and then moved on because the lines were starting to get pretty long and Davey was losing patience. Later we found a smaller slide that had much shorter lines so she could go several times, once even on her belly like a penguin.

I think she just barely beat Dave in their race down the track

Sitting on the Ice Throne

The lights looked beautiful as darkness fell and I was able to take just a couple pictures before my camera froze and decided to call it quits.

"Bring out your dead!" This is not the best picture, but I wanted to show the kids on the way out. They were pretty much little frozen puff balls.

Quick Trip to Sammamish

On Thursday we left Utah for a quick trip to Sammamish for Derek's farewell. After arriving in Seattle, we went straight up to the cabin from the airport for some time in the mountains.

Near our cabin there is a wilderness area that is perfect for snowshoeing because you can traipse around in the woods, blazing your on trail, because it's impossible to get lost! You don't have to worry about keeping track of where you are because the forest is bounded by a creek, a highway, power lines, and a ski run so, unless you 're walking in perfect circles, eventually you'll run into a boundary that you can follow back home.

Snowshoeing with my mom, Derek, Dave, and Jobe (the dog) - in this picture we are boldly crossing a stream of water only a few inches deep

Derek will be leaving soon for Teresina, Brazil, which is right on the equator and the temperature rarely goes below 75 degrees

Just Dave and I went on a second snowshoe adventure again today. There was fresh snow on the ground and the mountains should get another foot (or more!) over the weekend. We will hopefully be able to ski on Monday before we have to go home!

BYU vs. Idaho

Last night Dave and I went to the BYU football game. It was fun but f-f-f-freezing! Pretty much any child in attendance was dressed in a full snow suit. I came outfitted with pants, a shirt, a sweatshirt, a ski jacket, warm socks, boots, gloves, hat, scarf, hand warmers, two hoods, and....

HOT CHOCOLATE!!

We have a skinny thermos that fits unsuspectingly inside Dave's coat. The people sitting next to us were very jealous. We would break out the hot chocolate about twice a quarter and it was a life saver! When we ran out at the end of the third, we decided to go home. BYU was winning 42-7 at that point, so we had already seen most of the action. Go Cougars!

Part way through the first quarter, Riley Nelson left with a broken rib and Jake Heaps took over at quarterback. Dave and I made a little bet - Dave thought he would fumble first; I thought he would score a touchdown. I won and now Dave has an appointment with this dish pile - oh ye of little faith :)

Bundle Up!

It SNOWED today! If you climbed up to the "Y" you could have a snowball fight! I'm still in denial... it was sunny and 80 degrees on Tuesday. Where did this come from?

Our poor 5th graders were on a field trip today at the zoo in Salt Lake and came back soaking wet and shivering. I am glad to be snug at home wearing sweats and drinking hot chocolate. It is supposed to get back to the 70s next week, but mom & dad, I still think you might want to bring some warm clothes for your visit just in case winter decides to stick around!

Ready or Not, Here it Comes...

It's here! The first snow of the season. I guess it's time to find our snow scraper, dig coats out of our ski bags and buy some hot chocolate. Oh - and turn on the heat, because when we looked at the thermostat last night it was only 60 degrees in our apartment - brrrr!

I actually do love the snow, but last night wasn't the best time for its arrival... I had a soccer game, which we lost, but played well considering  it was sleeting, our feet felt like rocks, and the other team probably took 25 shots on goal compared to our 4.

It was also the night  I did a load of white laundry and reached into the box of dryer sheets only to find it empty. I decided to throw the clothes in the dryer anyway, and of course it turned into one giant ball of static - mesh bottoms and silk tops will do that.  Since all our neighbors were mysteriously gone and we needed some of those whites to wear the next morning, I went off to the grocery store at 10 pm in the snow in my pajamas. It probably won't be the last time I have to do this, so I guess I probably better find my boots too :)
