The Moana Birthday Party

This year we had Sophie's first birthday party. In previous years we had a few family members over for cake and presents, but this year she asked to have an actual party with friends, games, prizes, etc...the real deal. I agreed and her top two requests were to to have it be Moana themed and to play pin the tail on the donkey. Easy enough, right?

The invitations I made

Unfortunately, Moana is still a relatively new movie so there weren't many ideas out on Google or Pintrest yet to help me brainstorm. In the end I  had to do most of the creative thinking on my own and spent way too much time and energy planning this party, but it was fun and she LOVED it so I guess it was worth it. Next birthday is definitely going to be more low key though, like eating cake at a park.

I also had a lot of trouble finding Moana-themed stuff at the store. The stuff online was super expensive, and the party section at Walmart had a single table cloth left. My mom managed to find some cups at a craft store that we used as well, but that was it. For the rest we just did balloons, streamers, and a homemade banner.

I did see on Pintrest the idea to put leaves on the blades of a ceiling fan to make it look like a palm tree. It's hard to see in the picture, but I tried it and it actually turned out pretty cute.

I did all the prep the night before, and then my mom came to help me the day of the party. Dave was supposed to be defending his thesis that day, but it got rescheduled, so he was there to help as well. I was so glad to have them both there because we ended up with 8 kids, and Davey didn't nap that afternoon so I would have had my hands full!

Waiting for the party to start

Grandmari gave her the Moana shirt as an early birthday present so she could wear it to the party

I had planned out a few games to play, and then we ate cake and did presents. After it was all done I just let the kids play until parents came to take them home. There were only a few tears shed (by my own child) and the kids seemed to have a lot of fun, so I'm calling it a success!!

PRIZE BAGS: Each game we played had a little prize they could win (goldfish crackers, fruit snack, etc...) that would then go in their prize bag. I put a different character on each bag so they could easily identify which one was theirs. By the end of the party each guest had some fun treats to take home!

FISHING GAME: This is a classic that all little kids love. We moved our baby gate on the stairs up higher, draped a beach towel over, and then Dave hid behind it to attach bags of goldfish to the clip. They had such a fun time with this, and we had some extra treats on hand for the kids who wanted to do it a second time. They really had no idea there was a person behind there until the end when the towel slipped and someone saw his hand.

LIMBO: Our limbo had no real rules, which made it more fun. We put on some music from the movie and kept lowering the bar while they crawled back and forth as fast as they could.

WARMER/COLDER FIND MAUI'S HOOK: I forgot to take a picture of this game. The kids took turns hiding a treat with a picture of Maui's hook on it, while someone was out of the room. They would then give clues to that person to help them find the hook by saying "warmer" when they were close, and "colder" when they got farther away. We had them go in teams, since the concept was a little tricky for some kids to understand. After they found the hook and treat, it went in their prize bag!

KAKAMORA BOWLING: the Kakamora are little pirates dressed in coconut armor that attack Moana and Maui. I saw an idea online where someone made palm trees out of 2-liter bottles and then went bowling with a coconut painted like a Kakamora, but I thought it would be more fun to actually bowl down the Kakamora! I printed out pictures of their faces, taped them to brown lunch sacks, and then put a roll of toilet paper inside each one to make them more stable. Dave bought a coconut at the grocery store and it worked great! I let them all have two rolls to try and knock down as many as they could, and then at the end we let them all have another turn if they wanted to try again.

TAMATOA TARGET PRACTICE: in the movie Moana and Maui have to get past a giant crab named Tamatoa. I printed out a picture and was going to just have the kids throw things at him, but then I randomly found these chicken flingers in the dollar section at Target and thought this would be way more fun, especially since they look like Hei Hei from the movie. They did have a great time with this activity, and got to keep the chicken afterward to take home!

TE KA VOLCANOES: The final challenge for Moana is to confront a lava demon named Te Ka. The night before I filled a bunch of mini water bottles with 2 parts vinegar, 1 part water, and a drop of dish soap (this combination give a slower, longer reaction than just straight vinegar). I put each bottle in a pan and let the kids choose a color for their lava (food coloring), and then gave them some baking soda to scoop in. Eruption time!!

PIN THE HEART ON TE FITI: This was our final game. Sophie had specifically asked to play pin the tail on the donkey at her party, so we put a Moana twist on it and had them try to tape the "heart" stone on a picture of Te Fiti. She placed hers perfectly in the center, so I suspect there may have been some peeking :)

I was worried that maybe I had over planned, but we got through all the games in a little over an hour. To help with transitions, I had queued up several songs from the movie on my computer. I would play them between the games so they would have something to watch while I set up the next activity. As you can see, it drew them right in and worked like a charm!

I am not a master baker or decorator, so we just frosted a regular cake blue and put a Moana toy on top, which looked great and was a fun souvenir for her to keep for later!

Opening presents

The girls immediately started playing with a princess set she received as a gift, while the boys got out our box of cars. Davey seemed to know which group he belonged in.

And one of Sophie's friends who couldn't be there was so nice to give her this Moana dress. She loves it and I think I know what she will be wearing for Halloween now!

Weekend at Park City

We went up to Park City the first weekend in March to stay with my uncle at his timeshare. My brother and his wife also came up with us so it was a fun group!

On Saturday we took Sophie skiing at the base of the ski lift. She had only been once before and is still in the very early stages of learning, but any practice she can get is good for her! The stretch of snow she was practicing on was narrow and slick, with a metal bar on one side and a drop off on the other so the conditions weren't ideal, but she did pretty good. Hopefully we can get her up one more time this year before we move. After dinner we enjoyed the hot tubs, put the kids to bed, and then played cards.

Enjoying the fire afterward

On Sunday, we found a ward to attend and were surprised to find it was a special Sacrament Meeting just for visitors. The Park City ward receives anywhere from 100-1000 visitors each week so they have a dedicated meeting for guests, separate from their own meeting. It was just 45 minutes long, which was perfect for the kids, and then we went back to the condo for lunch. My parents arrived early that afternoon to join the fun. We played more games. went back to the hot tubs, and then had a big family dinner. The weather reports showed snow moving in around 9:00, so we played just a couple more games, and then left shortly after 8:00 to beat the storm.

My happy boy

Unfortunately, the reports were wrong. The storm came early than anticipate and snow was coming down fast and hard just as we were leaving. It was also extremely windy, which made visibility really poor. We slowly made our way to the interstate, and luckily traffic was light so it didn't matter it we strayed from our lane because the lines on the road were impossible to see. Once we got on I-80, Google maps told us there was an incident a few miles ahead, but it only estimated a 25 minute delay. We wanted to get home and were a little frustrated with the slow down, but at least the kids were sleeping so it wouldn't matter if we had to sit for a few minutes. Unfortunately, 25 minutes turned into an hour, then two, then three....

It was miserable. We were stopped with hundreds of other travelers while the snow just built up around us. We knew the incident was less than a mile ahead, but there were never any reports on what had actually happened or how long it would take. Since we were in the canyon there was no way to turn away and no way to get off and take an alternate route. Sometimes we would crawl forward a few feet, but it was just cars compressing and then we would stop and sit again. We saw a lot of cars make really really risky/dumb moves trying to use the narrow, snow covered, shoulder to pass traffic and get ahead. I know at least one got stuck and really had to fight to get going again and another ended up off the side in a ditch. So dumb.

It could have been much worse though. It had been 55 and sunny earlier that day and we had considered taking the Focus instead of the Escape, but our stuff fit better in the bigger car so we took it instead. I was so glad that we had 4-wheel drive and weren't in a little sedan! It was tricky driving even in a good car! The kids stirred a few times, but stayed asleep (huge blessing). We also had plenty of gas and didn't have to worry about shutting our car off to save fuel, which was good because ice was building up on our windshield even with the wipers going and the defroster on high. The lack of a bathroom made me a little nervous, but in the end I was fine. It would have been tricky if nature had called because there would have been zero privacy on the side of the road (plus it was a blizzard) and Dave forbid me from even thinking about using the cooler as a travel port-a-potty :)

After 4 hours we eventually started to move and found that the back up was just tons of cars and semis (at least 20) that couldn't make it through the storm and got stuck. It took that long for the tow trucks to pull everyone off to the side to create a path where others could pass through. It was crazy. After we made it, the rest of the drive wasn't too bad and we climbed into our beds sometime after 1:00 am. What a terrible end to an otherwise fun weekend.

February Roundup

I'm trying for the life of me to remember what happened in February, but nothing stands out. It was a quieter month and it gave us a chance to get back to our normal routine after being gone so much in January. We went out to our usual places, passed around a cold, spent many hours looking at house listings online, and just did our best to keep up with these kiddos.

For those who know cribbage, this hand was worth 28 points, just one point off the best hand possible!!

And another 14 points in the crib - what a round!

Saturday trip to Costco

I had my first ever massage (a Christmas present from Davey) and loved it!

We found these super hero masks on clearance at Smith's for $1.50. Davey is too young to enjoy them right now, but I'm sure they'll get lots of use down the road.

One of our weekly aquarium trips

The first half of February was cold and snowy. Storms just kept coming every couple days, and then suddenly the weather changed and it was like spring arrived in the blink of an eye.

Hooray for library story time. I'm not a artsy person, but this girl LOVES crafts and is always excited to see what the project we get to make at the end.

Flying high with daddy!

Sophie loves to help us cook, and despite several warnings, had a run in with the stove. Now that she's had her first burn we hope she will listen better and be more careful!

Another trip to the Dinosaur Museum

This boy has the best faces. I start laughing every time I look at this picture. What a goofball :)

Watching the Sound of Music for the first time with the kids. We didn't make it all the way through, but Sophie loved it and made us promise to let her see the rest sometime soon.

Our dryer was screeching so loud that Sophie asked if there was a monkey stuck in our closet. We are not DIY-type people, but YouTube is a great teacher and Dave was able to take it apart, replace the idle wheel, reassemble, and now it runs good as new!

❤ Love these two ❤

At dinner Sophie sat down and told us she had two daddys. Not sure where she was coming from, I responded that, no, she didn't. She disagreed, so I asked her who her other daddy was and she said "Heavenly Father." Smart girl.

Sophie was playing a new game on the iPad where you were supposed to match up words that rhyme. She was having a hard time understanding how it worked, so Dave went over to help her. Together they identified the possible choices - a frog, a car, and a sink and a dog. Then he said, "now think Sophie, what does DOG sound like?" Her answer - "woof" :)

Davey at 11 Months

This post is Davey's last update before his birthday. It's been a great year with this little guy and we love seeing his personality emerge as he gets older. He can be sweeter and happier than Sophie ever was, but he also has a major stubborn streak and can really be a pill sometimes. Out of sight does not mean out of mind, and if there is something he wants he will find a way to get it. He knows how to escape the bathtub, the bumbo seat, the stroller (if I don't do both buckles) and makes daily attempts to dive off the changing table. Last week he grabbed my phone off the counter and threw it on the ground, cracking the screen. It's a good thing he's cute because I have a feeling we are going to need to keep a watchful eye on this little guy once he starts walking!

Davey at 11 Months
  • 30 inches long and 23.5 pounds. He's put on a pound since last month, proof he's growing again!
  • Sleep has been better. He naps at 10 and 2 each day, and goes down from 7 pm to 7 am at night. I allow him one feeding around 4, and at that time I move him from the crib in Sophie's room to the pack n' play in our room. She wakes up pretty early, so it works best to move him in with us in the wee hours of morning so she doesn't wake him up later on.
  • He loves to have his head and back rubbed, and will snuggle into you if you give him a good massage.
  • Learned to wave, and will sometimes do "so big". We are still trying to teach him how to clap.
  • Is in to everything and loves to scatter things. His daily routine involves knocking over the stack of library books, emptying the kitchen drawers, pulling all the magnets off the fridge and checking all corners of the house for treasures we may have left within reach. Sophie is always yelling "brother found something tiny!" that we then go fish out of his mouth.
  • Has started playing with Sophie for short periods of time and puts up with a lot of tough loving from her.
  • Is very vocal and will sometimes imitate sounds we make, but says no real words
  • He is now eating about 4 oz of baby food and a bowl of oatmeal each day. It's been slow and steady progress. He also enjoys soup, corn, potatoes, pretzels, pizza crust, and yogurt. I'm curious to see what will happen when we give him some cake for his birthday next month.
Just having a party in the mother's lounge at church, instead of napping like he's supposed to

He fell asleep folded in half the other day

Still just 4 little teeth, although I think he may be getting some more on top. It's hard to tell because his teeth come in soooo sloooow.

And check out this crazy tongue trick! I've never seen a tongue move the way his does.
