April Roundup

April was an interesting month. We had highs in the 90s and lows in the 20s, and there were huge winds every time the temperatures changed. After the shopping cart started blowing away one day with both boys inside, Davey became very concerned anytime it was windy and would often ask about what would happen if baby brother, mommy, Sophie, Yellow, or Davey blew away. Silly boy. Here are a few updates about each of us:
  • Dave was called as the new Elder's Quorum President for our ward, which will be a big job with the recent changes. Meetings, speaking assignments and welfare needs have kept him very busy.
  • I have started to make friends with some other moms in our ward and stake. A group of them talked me into joining a local gym. I am not much of a fitness person, but so far I have joined them for a Pilates class, and worked out a few times on my own. It has child care available which is a great motivator for me to go exercise!
  • Thanks to a color-changing spoon that came in the box of Honey Nut Cheerios, Sophie is finally eating her cereal with milk and a spoon, instead of dry with her fingers. She has also started to learn to read (more on that later!)
  • Davey is done with bottles and the transition wasn't as hard as expected. He also moved out of his high chair to a booster seat and now eats meals at the table with the rest of the family.
  • Charlie continues to be an awesome baby, who seems to be growing right before our eyes!
Here are a few more April photos:

April Sickness: I got a 24 hour flu bug that kept me and Charlie home from church one Sunday, and Sophie's had a bad ear infection that caused a few sleepless nights before we got it under control.

Bubble Mania at the Discovery Center! We learned that if you mix a bit of glycerin into bubble solution it makes them stronger. Sophie had fun holding and bouncing them around.

Davey made a long "choo choo" out of these tile blocks at the Discovery Center. I love he is able to focus on activities longer as he gets older.

The kids love these little shopping carts at Untied. To my surprise, Davey is actually a more conscientious driver than Sophie. We will have to watch out for her as a teenager!

Sleeping in with Charlie

Silly Davey

Tim and Cindy's family stayed with us for a night on their way down from Idaho to Dallas.  We took them to a park and the kids had an awesome time playing with their Howe cousins. It was so nice to see them!

Sophie combed her eyebrows in the bath one night - it's good thick brows are in style right now!

We purchased another Groupon for glow golf since the kids loved it so much last time. It was a great way to spend a rainy Saturday, and Sophie even got two hole-in-ones!

Charlie is the happiest baby :)

In between all the fights, there is lots of sibling love going on around here

After a few months off, we took the kids swimming again at the WT pool. Sophie jumped right in and had a great time, especially since her friend Ethan was also there with his family.

Davey also loves swimming, but spent most of his time on the sidelines with me where I was hanging out with Charlie. He was having a few tummy issues that night and went through three swim diapers... not fun.

Snuggling my little Charlie bug

The big kids have never fallen asleep on the couch and then, within just a few days of each other, they both passed out and took long couch naps. I guess they must have been extra tired.

Charlie, on the other hand, takes couch naps all the time.

Charlie Goes to Church

We like to keep our new babies home for a short time before bringing them to church, partly because we know too many kids that have ended up in the hospital with RSV, and because just I like having some one-on-one time with my baby while they are still tiny. At six weeks, though, Charlie made his church debut and he was a hit! Our ward has had very few babies born in the last year and there was no shortage of people willing/wanting to hold him. And who wouldn't want him?? Charlie is so squishy and cute :) I think over the entire month I've only held him for a few minutes of each sacrament meeting, and during our trips to the mother's lounge.

Unfortunately our going back to church also coincided with Dave being called as the new Elder's Quorum President, which has made getting ready to leave a bit chaotic since I now have a newborn, and no help getting everybody bathed and dressed for church in the morning. Thank goodness we are on the 11:00 schedule right now instead of 9:00, or we would be late every week!

A Monday with My Zoo Crew

Sophie has been asking to visit the zoo again, and since we only have a few months left before she leaves us to start full-day kindergarten, I packed up the kids and a picnic lunch and to the zoo we went! Even though our zoo is not very exciting, it's perfect for small kids we had a great day together enjoying gorgeous weather and seeing the animals. Highlights from this trip were feeding the goats dead leaves, seeing the lion roar, making "birthday cakes" in the sand pit, and petting a donkey.

I had to get creative to fit three kids on a double stroller, but we did it! Davey is sitting on the tray table, which luckily can support 30 pounds.

Cute little prairie dogs eating breakfast

Sophie loves the "fake poop" display in the education center. She is holding the very real-looking bear excrement sample.

Someday we may have enough little faces to fill all those holes :)

I remembered to bring some sand toys this time and the kids played in the dig pit for an hour. The fun ended when Davey decided to start throwing sand at people, including me, thus prompting a "time out" on top of the log tunnel.

Charlie enjoyed looking at the trees and feeling the breeze

Cheer Texas

Last week I took the kids to "Cheer Texas," a  cheer/gymnastics facility we heard about from another family in our Stake. Amarillo is a big city, but not huge, and it's isolated, so I'm always excited when we find a new place to go have fun. And bonus points if it happens to be somewhere indoors (our weather is very unpredictable) and low cost!

The gym is mostly used for lessons and training, but on Fridays they open for "Family Play Time" so we went to check it out. There was a bouncy house, trampolines, tumbling mats, a giant spring floor, and a big foam block pit. It was $5/kid so we won't go weekly, but there is a play group that meets here about once a month and next time we will definitely tag along. Things are always more fun with friends!

Sophie had a fantastic time and can't wait to go back

Davey was a bit of a grump and kept asking to go home to watch Paw Patrol, but he did manage to have some fun in between pouting sessions

Charlie did his part by taking a great nap :)

Happy Monday

This week got off to a good start, especially compared to our difficult Monday last week. I've found our days go much better if we get out of the house, even if it's just for a little bit. A change of scenery seems to help the kids from getting too annoyed with each other, and me from losing my patience with them, so it's a win for everyone. Except Charlie, who has to just hang out in his car seat.

With a baby it takes forever to get ready to finally leave the house, but we normally manage to get out the door around 10 am. Our destination for the day was the grocery store, followed by the mall play space.  It wasn't too crowded and the kids had a fun time running and climbing. After an hour of play, we went home for lunch, naps, and then only had a short time before Dave got home for dinner. It was a good day.

I have two little cars in my diaper bag that the kids love to play with. The only thing that would be better is if they were identical so there wouldn't be a dispute each time over who got which one.

Helllllp Sophie! - She really is good about watching out for Davey and "lending a hand" when needed

Charlie also turned six weeks old on Monday. At this age he has mastered his smile and we love seeing his happy, little face! We've seen smiles for a couple weeks, but he gives them freely now and is especially happy in the morning when I go to pick him up from his bed.

Charlie is growing fast and it will be time to get out the 6 month clothes in a week or so. I have noticed that he's getting heavier to carry around, and am guessing he weighs around 12 pounds now. Although I'm sad my tiny baby is getting big so fast, I hope as he grows it will help him better weather the sibling storm that descends upon him each day with force. Just the other day he was the object of a tug of war between Davey and Sophie. One had his head, and the other his body... poor baby. I can't turn my back for a second.

Charlie smiling up at me from the front pack

His best smiles always come on the changing table

Napping on my chest after a feeding - love those squishy cheeks!
